Maiden’s Mountain

In the northeast of Elbasan city, there is a mountain peak called “Maiden’s Mountain.”

Today it is difficult to divide the boundary of the legend with that of the truth, but as always, these cases turn into legends as centuries go by.” Maiden’s Mountain ” remains a symbol of passionate love. But why did it get this name? Which is the legend of this mountain? What do the villagers of Polis hide about this story? This is how an old man in the village of Polis in Elbasan narrates the legend of “ Maiden’s Mountain ” :

Maiden’s Mountain

“Both were young when they fell in love with each other;  it was love at first sight. Unfortunately, they were prevented from crowning this love because the boy was poor, whereas the girl was the daughter of a rich man. Both suffered in silence the consequences of their love and saw no path to be together unless suicide. But here, the older adult of the village decided to help the two lovers, but his decision burdened the boy who had just entered the age of manhood. At that time, a man subject to the whims of the woman was highly punished.  And in this case, it was decided that at the request of the girl’s father, the boy had to hold his girlfriend in his arms from the foot of the mountain to the top without stopping, which, even without anything in the arms, could be barely climbed. The condition was immediately accepted by the young man, who was ready for any sacrifice. The elders of the village of Polis gathered to follow closely the implementation of the condition, after which the youth wedding day would be set. In the first few meters of climbing, the boy looked like he was flying, but it didn’t last long. The elders watched anxiously as the boy stepped down and encouraged him, saying, “go on, go on,  almost reached.” And the boy reached the top, but at the last moment because of great straining, his heart stopped beating. To be loyal to this unconditioned love of supreme sacrifice, the girl accepted no other destiny than happy death and eternal love. So the girl jumped off from the steep mountain peak, about 700 meters high in the precipice. ” The provincial elders show it convincingly as if it had happened during their father’s generation, but it was passed from generation to generation. This is the end of the incorporated love of these two lovers, which will remain forever as an immortal feeling. Of course that the generations that are to come will never forget “ Maiden’s Mountain “and the history it personifies.
